“After a disability advocate with Tourette’s shouted the N-word at the BAFTAs award ceremony”

It wasn’t just a disability advocate - the winning film for ‘Best Actor’ was I Swear, a film all about Tourette’s which was literally *BASED ON HIS LIFE*, and which the lead actor was literally playing him! The biggest irony is that if people had actually bothered to watch the film, they would have understood exactly what happened and why and have complete sympathy for him, hence why the British Black community has more or less turned around and told the Americans where they can shove it. I try to be sympathetic but times like this are when Americans’ cultural blind spots really start to become genuinely obnoxious.

Fortunately the CHH blog is usually a source of common sense and I do appreciate you taking the correct side on this. However for your oversight in not knowing who John Davidson is, I hereby demand that you actually watch I Swear so you have full context for what’s going on here (it’s really good and you’ll be glad you did).

Thanks for the call out. I was actually familiar with this, but I think I just forgot to add it so I can always edit.

No worries, the Americans comment wasn’t aimed at you at all! You should absolutely still watch I Swear though

Mamdani showing up in the Oval Office with a fake newspaper is the stuff of which satire used to be made. Yet it worked. There's the cartoon world we live in right now.

Thanks for bringing back Many Such Takes! I didn't realize how much I missed until I saw it again, like a long lost friend.

Isn't the "disabled slaveowners" guy the same guy who gave us "Anne Frank had white privilege"?

As much fun as these are always to read, I really hope that CHH is being responsible and honest with herself about the mental health effects… would love to see more, but please proceed with caution!

I have a whole article coming out on that soon. I definitely was on Twitter too much last night because I couldn’t sleep, but otherwise I’m really trying to stay off and I am not installing it on my phone.

Glad this is back. Actually keeps me off twitter because I feel like I get the best of it here anyways.

(Meme of soldier blocking knives with body but the knives are tweets)

>SF is no more dangerous or dirty than LA or NYC

I have visited Downtown LA last summer. Lots of trash in the streets, graffiti, smell of pee. This is *not* the standard that any world-class city should aspire to.

Yeah, not to split hairs or anything here, but I feel much safer in New York City than in Los Angeles

“Actually really racist guy with Tourettes involuntarily shouting nice things about black people” really made me laugh. Great joke.

What is it with Candace Owens transvestigating women? I have no love for Erika Kirk, but plenty of young girls had a Dorothy Hamill haircut back in the day (including me, of course).I hope she sues and wins, along with Brigitte Macron.

I would change that first sentence to “what is it with Candace Owens having any kind of audience whatsoever?”. Transvestigating women seems 100% on-brand for her.

Very funny stuff, thank you for this important public service

awesomizer's avatar

Okay, the one about the racist with Tourette’s who keeps shouting nice things about Black people had me laughing out loud. And the thing about Mamdani, Trump and the fake newspaper is *real*?!? Mamdani is one smart mofo. And you gotta love the Mr. Burns cartoon.

Ok but "The Bride of Charlie" is an excellent horror movie title

BAFTAs editing out "free Palestine" and not the racial slurs on a taped program with a 2 hour delay really gives the game up!

Field Observer's avatar

“The BAFTAs” was really just a couple of guys in a van trying to edit things - they’d managed to catch one of the other tics which was another racial slur, but had missed that particular one. It’s a screwup and I think both Davidson and the actors can justifiably feel aggrieved by it, but treating it like some sort of deliberate conspiracy isn’t justified

Pam B's avatar

lol, no. "A couple of guys" are you trying to say a professional award ceremony that has aired for years isn't run up to BBC standards? Wasn't the awards ceremony on tape delay as well? Alan Cummings 'apology' was noncommittal and no one from BAFTA approached Delroy Lindo or Michael B Jordan to apologize either.

You can have sympathy for John Davidson while admitting the harm done to two actors and that BAFTA screwed up.

Field Observer's avatar

I’m not entirely sure which part of “It’s a screwup” wasn’t clear? I don’t disagree that BAFTA made some quite substantial mistakes (if you read John Davidson’s interview he also points out that he was placed near a microphone for reasons he didn’t understand) - my point is just that the word not being censored was a accidental cock-up born of negligence rather than a deliberate decision to censor one thing and not others. The ‘guys in a van’ comes directly from the BBC and BAFTA’s own staff.

Pam B's avatar

To me, 'guys in a van' is an attempt to pretend professionals are not professionals. "Oh, we're just guys in a van, we don't know what we're doing yet we are in charge at a professional televised event that's been happening for years". Come on, now. If it comes from BAFTA and BBC, well, it makes sense they are trying to minimize their mistake.

Finding out they deliberately placed a microphone near Davidson implies they were hoping his tics would provide them with a soundbite, which it did, which means they should have been even more prepared for the fallout.

Again, I put this all on the BBC and BAFTA, not on Davidson. They got the attention they were seeking, though.

Loser centrist democrats: "Trump is crazy! When will republicans finally come to their senses?!😠"

Mamdani: "Trump is crazy! If you are ever short on money just hand him a bag labeled 'magic beans' 😁"

Thank you Mrs. Cartoons for your service diving through twitter's slop and picking the funniest bits, it saves me from having to go on there myself and endlessly scroll through it while I think "oh my god how do these people have functional lives like at all???"

But yeah, I'm perfectly fine with you scaling back Many Such Takes, I flat out quit twitter like, a year ago because it just was more stressful than anything else

I've found the twitter algorithm isn't as shit as it usually is. You can parse "decent" tweets from the usual ragebait, vague posting, and repeated memes.

Sad we didn't get any Hatchling tweets but those were a bit mean.
