Mamdani showing up in the Oval Office with a fake newspaper is the stuff of which satire used to be made. Yet it worked. There's the cartoon world we live in right now.

Thanks for bringing back Many Such Takes! I didn't realize how much I missed until I saw it again, like a long lost friend.

“After a disability advocate with Tourette’s shouted the N-word at the BAFTAs award ceremony”

It wasn’t just a disability advocate - the winning film for ‘Best Actor’ was I Swear, a film all about Tourette’s which was literally *BASED ON HIS LIFE*, and which the lead actor was literally playing him! The biggest irony is that if people had actually bothered to watch the film, they would have understood exactly what happened and why and have complete sympathy for him, hence why the British Black community has more or less turned around and told the Americans where they can shove it. I try to be sympathetic but times like this are when Americans’ cultural blind spots really start to become genuinely obnoxious.

Fortunately the CHH blog is usually a source of common sense and I do appreciate you taking the correct side on this. However for your oversight in not knowing who John Davidson is, I hereby demand that you actually watch I Swear so you have full context for what’s going on here (it’s really good and you’ll be glad you did).

Thanks for the call out. I was actually familiar with this, but I think I just forgot to add it so I can always edit.

Field Observer's avatar

No worries, the Americans comment wasn’t aimed at you at all! You should absolutely still watch I Swear though

Instead of wearing a gag I think he should - wait for it - apologize, which - wait for it - he already did.

Good on the British community, I hadn’t heard that part of the discourse.

It’s not been released in America yet and the hosts weren’t judges so wouldn’t have been given a copy.

Isn't the "disabled slaveowners" guy the same guy who gave us "Anne Frank had white privilege"?

Loser centrist democrats: "Trump is crazy! When will republicans finally come to their senses?!😠"

Mamdani: "Trump is crazy! If you are ever short on money just hand him a bag labeled 'magic beans' 😁"

Glad this is back. Actually keeps me off twitter because I feel like I get the best of it here anyways.

>SF is no more dangerous or dirty than LA or NYC

I have visited Downtown LA last summer. Lots of trash in the streets, graffiti, smell of pee. This is *not* the standard that any world-class city should aspire to.

Cartoons Hate Her's avatar

Yeah, not to split hairs or anything here, but I feel much safer in New York City than in Los Angeles

There are neighborhoods I am unwilling to walk through with my white, bearded, 6'3" husband because he grew up rich in the suburbs and walks like a tourist. Yes, even tourists should be able to be safe walking around! But I think I'm a good deal safer walking around a dubious neighborhood than he is because I grew up in one and know how to walk like I know where I'm going. He takes fliers when people hand them to him! Who does that?

Alex S's avatar

Definitely depends on the neighborhood. LA is mostly totally safe but you can easily wander into skid row.

As much fun as these are always to read, I really hope that CHH is being responsible and honest with herself about the mental health effects… would love to see more, but please proceed with caution!

Cartoons Hate Her's avatar

I have a whole article coming out on that soon. I definitely was on Twitter too much last night because I couldn’t sleep, but otherwise I’m really trying to stay off and I am not installing it on my phone.

This is a great companion piece to your two about wanting to feel safe in public. Because it feels like there's a LOT of overlap between the people saying, "You should just let people scream at you on the subway, because they have a tough life!" are also saying, "Ewwww this guy's disability made him racist, so let's just separate him from society forever!"

There was a boy in my high school who had Tourette's Syndrome. He was a studious, shy, soft spoken Asian math nerd who intermittently yelled out "FUCK YOU!" or "BITCH!" several times during every class. A whole school full of teenagers learned how to mostly ignore this; no one took it personally, and after a while, it seemed as significant as the radiator clanging. Of course, this occurred in the 90's, and acting like a victim on the internet held no incentivizing power back then.

What is it with Candace Owens transvestigating women? I have no love for Erika Kirk, but plenty of young girls had a Dorothy Hamill haircut back in the day (including me, of course).I hope she sues and wins, along with Brigitte Macron.

melanin's avatar

I guess this is what right wing cancel culture looks like. Instead of exposing someone for being racist, homophobic, a sexual abuser etc. the worst thing you could be to a mainstream far right personality is a secret trans woman.

awesomizer's avatar

I would change that first sentence to “what is it with Candace Owens having any kind of audience whatsoever?”. Transvestigating women seems 100% on-brand for her.

BasicB's avatar

Never underestimate the number of crazy people in the world who are looking for someone even crazier to follow.

Sean's avatar

I image a non trivial percentage of her audience likes watching her lose it. She’s clearly unwell and not very bright.

Matthew Evans's avatar

The transvestigators transvestigated JK Rowling and claimed she was a trans woman. This is fully on brand.

Theodric's avatar

Weren’t the politics flipped in that case though? That was left-wing TRAs trying to prove JK was a self-hating hypocrite, meanwhile Candace is an off-the-deep-end right wing conspiracy theorist who is also trying to link Kirk to Mossad.

Matthew Evans's avatar

What’s to explain. You asked a question, the answer is no.

Theodric's avatar

The transvestigators of JK Rowling were right wing, is that what you are saying?

Toiler On the Sea's avatar

I thought Kirk and Owens had had a "friendly chat" that was supposed to squash some of their beef. That shit didn't last lol . . .

Thanks for sifting through Twitter so we don’t have to, CHH! Just guard your own mental health first!

I googled and yes, Zohran Mamdani *really did* win bigly by presenting Trump with a fake newspaper with his name and face on it. Whatever I may think of Mamdani’s political views, that’s some VERY impressive people skills. All Mamdani had to do was feed Trump’s ego and voila! I do not know if it would work on MAGA at large, because Trump’s ego is unique, but perhaps superficial flattery and butt-kissing, without actually making concessions or swaying principles, is the way to maneuver around MAGA.

As for Tough Daddy up there…”Constans” is right, “I only had a knife pulled on me once, had someone break into my house, oh and I stepped in human excrement six times” is NOT the flex that he thinks it is. Really. “I had a knife pulled on me but I was able to talk him down” whereas, presumably, “Karen” just shrieks? Dude. Buddy. Pal. In a decently civilized city you wouldn’t need a line of patter in order to not get stabbed. And I don’t need to point out that a woman or elderly man might not be able to talk their way out of harm’s way like an able-bodied young man could. So, you enjoy your little urban adventures, but some of us would like to not have our houses broken into or constantly step in shit, or, god forbid, be held up at knifepoint. I don’t think this is a big ask.

awesomizer's avatar

Not to diminish Mamdani’s hilarious achievement, but it wouldn’t work on MAGA at large. Being overly susceptible to flattery is part of Trump’s personal pathology, not an ideological trait of his entire movement. Though admittedly it would be funny to see someone try to treat Stephen Miller like he’s charming and cuddly.

melanin's avatar

Yeah, it's really a byproduct of how incredibly vapid Trump is politically and how much personal interactions take primacy over any kind of actual philosophy or ideology. Mamandi checks almost all the boxes of what the MAGA movement hates but since he's a charming and charismatic personality (or to use the parlance of a recent CHH article, he absolutely fucks) and he decides to butter Trump up in private meetings, Trump can't say enough nice things about him.

Theodric's avatar

The BAFTA kerfluffle definitely feels like a 2020 throwback. It’s a reminder of how for a certain subset of too-online people, “disability as an identity” has more or less completely subsumed “disability as an actual disability”.

The “pan-disability” identity thing is weird to me. No, of course a wheelchair user shouting racial slurs should not be treated the same way as a person with Tourette’s doing so. Those are two completely different things! Thats’s exactly why it usually doesn’t make sense to label them both “disabled” with not additional context of we’re talking about individuals. But for some reason the online discourse is all about “disability”.

awesomizer's avatar

Okay, the one about the racist with Tourette’s who keeps shouting nice things about Black people had me laughing out loud. And the thing about Mamdani, Trump and the fake newspaper is *real*?!? Mamdani is one smart mofo. And you gotta love the Mr. Burns cartoon.

“I’m sick and tired of all these NICE AFRICAN GENTLEMEN moving into our city! No dammit I meant KIND AND ARTICULATE FOLKS!
