MEN: Would you like to be featured in my men's fashion survey?
Everything is more fun with real people- including fashion studies!
A little while ago, I published my study of women’s fashion to see how different genders and orientations felt about different female fashion styles, which I like to think as the trial run for the fashion studies I’ll be doing in the near future. People had some great feedback about the outfits, the lack of variety, and the grouping of sexual orientations.
I always intended to do a male version, but this one is going to be way better (and later, I’ll re-do the female version too.) For one, I’ll be partnering with
to analyze results, and he is waaaay better with statistics than I am. Second, I really want to use real men’s outfits so that I’m not limited to retail photos. That’s where you come in!How to send in your pics
DM me on Substack! I don’t normally DM 1:1 but I will keep an eye out for these pics. (Edit: send a message saying hello first, apparently I need to accept it to receive pics….cant imagine why that rule exists 😂)
Requirements
I need a clear, full-body photo in a standing position. Your face will be cropped so don’t worry about that, but I can’t accept blurry, too-dark or unclear photos.
You don’t need to be stylish or conventionally attractive- I want all types of photos, with an emphasis on variety. If you have a super weird or unique style that’s obviously great, but I need regular looks too.
About 30-40 men’s photos will be chosen, so don’t feel bad if your pic doesn’t get selected. Again, it’s not about your style being good or you being attractive. It’s about how your outfit fits with the other selected outfits in terms of variety.
Risks
People will rate your outfit from 1-10 with 5 being “don’t like or dislike it.” If you are sensitive and you suspect a low rating will offend you, this is not for you. Keep in mind that the female fashion survey, which featured almost exclusively models resulted in an average outfit rating of 5.5, even when filtering for straight men. Do not take a low rating personally!
I will instruct the respondents to focus on whether they like your outfit or not. Obviously, if they’re attracted to men, their attraction might factor into their rating. However, they are not rating your body, they’re rating the clothes.
I will instruct commenters not to make objectifying or overtly sexual remarks about the outfits but they will likely comment on the outfits in detail. For example, “Damn that guy has a sexy body” or “That guy looks like a gross slob” is not acceptable but “That suit really flatters his shape” or “Those pants are hitting him at an unflattering length” is acceptable.
The survey results will be at least partially paywalled, but if your outfit is chosen, that will be clear before the paywall. I obviously want everyone to become a paid subscriber (biased, I know) but if you’re a free subscriber you’re welcome to use a free trial to see the results of the survey. Who knows, maybe you’ll stick around? ;)
While you’re here, check out the other work I’ve done on male and female fashion!
How long is this call open for?
Anxious half of my brain said "Oh man, but what if the pics do the style injustice?" and the other, more autistic half responded, "Wait, this is a great opportunity to get randomized feedback on those suspected errors..."
