I’ve needed a daily 15 minute break as a Mom from like, 3 days postpartum, and I can live with it if that makes Twitter think I’m an awful Mom 😂 also re: the folic acid discourse, I’ve seen Trads opine that folic acid is responsive for the rise in autism in the past few decades and that folate is the desirable alternative. FWIW I only took folate during my pregnancy (not on purpose, it’s just what my prenatal had) and had no issues, but considering that everything is fortified with folic acid nowadays I’m sure I got plenty regardless

I've been focusing on supplements a lot for other health reasons, and apparently the forms in which a lot of nutrients get added to foods don't actually help us absorb them. This is true for iron and some of the b-vitamins in wheat, I've found (folate is also a b-vitamin). The most sure-fire way seems to be to get these nutrients from food, like eggs, asparagus, peas and spinach are great for folate. Supplements feel hit or miss tbh, and I'm glad my obgyn tested me regularly for low levels of vitamins and minerals and we found supplements that actually helped (and they were always ones that you got direct from the manufacturer somehow, couldn't find them in drugstores). The whole pregnancy experience got me to really focus on what I'm getting out of my food and holy shit i was eating such garbage before lol.

The folic acid thing is simple - we all can absorb folate fine and that's what we need. But for some of us, consuming folic acid can prevent the absorption of folate, leading to all the scary birth defects. My obgyn gave me folate-based very fancy vitamins you had to order straight from the manufacturer (I felt very fancy) and told me to avoid drugstore folic acid. I also never had morning sickness, and later came across how drugstore vitamins actually induce reactions that manifest as morning sickness, often because of the folate/folic acid thing, so this stuff is real. There's a lot to be said about how vitamins are extracted and added to flour and drugstore prenatals.

I was afraid that I might find myself quoted in the ‘moms don’t need a break’ fight because I participated. I did get into it with a mother of a 16 month old who never wanted to leave her child alone because she wanted to ‘make memories’. Um, your 16 month old isn’t going to remember they you met a friend for coffee or went to dinner with your husband without him once in a while. Turns out she never wants to be apart from her husband or child (even shopping without them is ‘boring’) so I said “it’s ok if you eventually change your mind” and walked away.

I'm not really the audience for standup, but it can't possibly be that any "left leaning" comedy is just, what, a John Oliver show? To the extent I see clips of standup from time to time, they don't resemble a lecture?

The theory with folic acid is that it causes tongue ties in those with the MTHFR mutation. Possibly other bad stuff too. However you can take methylfolate instead for the same benefits without the issues- MTHFR mutation is related to methylation.

I don’t know how strong the science is but I’m mildly interested in tongue ties because they run in my family (as does MTHFR.) I do know that my family members who used methylfolate still had kids with tongue ties, but possibly less severe than the oldest cousin whose mom took normal prenatal vitamins.

There does seem to be evidence of tongue ties becoming a lot more prevalent since folic acid was added to everything, and there is some evidence for downstream health effects, everything from cot death to sleep apnea to ADHD and autism, associated with that.
