I've Been Wearing a MAGA Dress
Apparently my favorite dress (and my favorite fashion brand) are Trump-coded.
For a while now, I’ve accepted that my favorite fashion aesthetic isn’t for everyone. When I went to Paris, I accepted that I was dressing exactly like an American tourist who wanted people to think she was Parisian, and whose idea of Parisian fashion came entirely from Instagram. But I wore the clothes anyway, because I didn’t care. This was how I dressed in America, and I was going to dress like that in Paris too. Yes, it may have made me look like an American tryhard, but wouldn’t it be trying harder for me to be scared off the attire because I didn’t want to seem like a tryhard?
Apparently, it could be worse. Instead of looking like an unconvincing “old money” influencer, I could look like…the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt.
This week, Leavitt came under fire for touting tariffs on China while wearing a dress that was made in China herself. Who cares, right? Me! Because that dress was a red knit number from my favorite brand, Self Portrait—and I own it too.
